Exploring New Places | Design Team: Junell Kruzell

Hello everyone! Junell here on the blog today! I may not be someone who travels a lot (thank you, Anxiety),  but I can go to many, many different places in the world by the magic of books (thank you, talented Authors)! Many of you have shared with me that you felt the same way after seeing this layout. It brings me comfort knowing I am not alone. Today, I’m sharing how I created it.

I started with the left side.  That half earth die-cut really packs a punch and I wanted to use it as soon as I saw it! I then rifled through all the die-cuts and found a title that would relate to my theme of traveling through books. I also found a die-cut of some travel guides that looked like some books so I layered that behind my title as well. I wanted to keep my color scheme to blues and greens so I used the blue and green flags to layer as well. They reminded me of the flags that people who climb mountains post at the top of their climb! So I clustered it all together, spilling onto the white space to the right of the globe. (My pages are 5.5x8.5 inches.) I added the rub-on stars for a little pizzazz and interest!

I also added the black and white cardstock sticker along the bottom of the page to ground it. Then came the journaling. I used the free version of Canva to do this. I first create a 5.5x8.5 blank background and then add a circle element to block off the “earth”. I add a text box and left justify the text. In Canva you have to manually press the space button for each line to get the curved text, but I have my circle there to block off that space to make it super easy for me. It does take a little time but it’s worth it for me. I do not like the look of my handwritten journaling.  I then remove the circle and then download my page. I use the Print To Size app to print on clear, matte sticker paper. I then had to cut around the curved text to adhere it to the page.

For the right side, I created a grid of books in Canva and printed it out at the correct size. I wanted something to balance the circle shape of the earth on the left on the right as well. I cut a circle and attached it using book tape. I find that washi does not work well for this. I attached it to the right edge so it opens outward. I found this quote on Pinterest that fit my theme perfectly and use the Frankie Alpha to stamp it out.

On the inside I added more die-cuts and a line about what these books represented.

I am thrilled with how this turned out! Let me know if you have any more questions about how I created this layout! Thanks for reading and you can find more of my layouts here on Instagram.
